For Parents or Individuals

Most parents today will remember the Cycling Proficiency test. I bet you still have your little triangular badge stored safely somewhere! So how did we get from Cycling Proficiency to Bikeability?

  • 1930's Cycling Proficiency was created in response to the increasing volume of traffic in the UK
  • Late 1940's Cycling Proficiency adopted by the government, who asked safety charity, Rospa, to co-ordinate it.
  • 1950-1974 Cycling Proficiency training carried out by local police and parent volunteers, mainly in school playgrounds.
  • 1975-2000 No national standard existed, leading to a wide diversity in what was being taught
  • 2000 The CTC led a review of cycle training
  • 2004 Launch of the child National Standard for cycle training
  • 2006 Cycling England launched Bikeability, (the new cycling proficiency for the 21st Century) as the Award Scheme for cyclists trained to the National Standards. Bikeability is much more relevant to today's traffic conditions.
  • 2007 to present day Bikeability training in delivered by National Standards Instructors throughout the UK

How can you benefit from Bikeability?

We organise 1 to 1 sessions for anyone who wants to improve their skills. Contact us for more details.

Testimony from a mother who booked a course for her and her son (Oct 2011): I was so pleased that I did Level 1 and Level 2. In three sessions I progressed from feeling wobbly and nervous - having not ridden a bike seriously for about 15 years - to feeling confident enough to cycle in town with my son. I felt I had to take some action because my son was keen to cycle but did not have enough experience of cycling on roads. We live in Oxford and the streets are busy and sometimes difficult to negotiate. Although I had ridden a little as a student, I didn't feel at all confident about how to cycle on roads - I wasn't even sure what the rules were. Francesca patiently guided us through each step. Every new procedure - whether it was understanding how to use gears or cycling round a mini-roundabout - was presented clearly - adapted to each individual's ability. We were shown how to cycle confidently and invited to practice each step. It was extremely empowering. I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone wishing to improve their skills and confidence. I would say it is essential for children and adults, like me, who want to cycle safely in towns. We are planning to take Level 3 in the next holidays

You can sign up for one of our Family Cycle Training courses.

We have run a monthly Bike Club for two years and would be happy to share our experience. Contact us if you want to organise a Bike Club in your area.
